Annual General Meeting – Monday, May 7 at 7:00 PM

All members of the Midland Curling Club are notified that the Annual General Meeting of the Corporation will take place at the Club on Monday, May 7th, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. Items to be dealt with at the meeting include league reports, financial reports, and the nomination and election of the Board of Directors for the next year.

Traditionally, reports have been distributed to attendees at the meeting. This year, to cut down on the amount of paper printed and to give members a chance to review reports prior to the meeting, we will email reports to those members who request to receive them this way. If you plan to attend the AGM and would like to receive AGM handouts by email by May 4 please respond to president@midlandcurlingclub.com.

Social time will follow the business meeting. All Members are encouraged to attend and participate. Remember, this is your Club and your chance to influence its future.

Right to Brag – Championship Night

The final night of the Right to Brag saw team Jones defeat team Plant in the Youth division.

In the adult division, on the championship side, Thursday night’s team Mulroy defeated Monday night’s team Blake to claim this year’s Right to Brag.

On the consolation side Friday night’s team Wilson defeated the day curlers team Drummond.

Congratulations to all those who participated and we look forward to seeing everybody next year.

Right to Brag – Night 2

Wednesday night’s matchups and scores for the Right to Brag were as follows:

In the youth section Team Jones beat team Camin. Tonight’s championship game will see team Jones up against team Plant for the youth section Right to Brag.

In adult play, on the championship side team Blake beat team Gordon and team Mulroy beat team Lorette. Tonight Championship game team Blake plays team Mulroy.

On the consolation side team Wilson beat team Hunter and team Drummond beat team Richardson. Tonight team Wilson plays team Drummond for the Consolation prize.

Good curling to all the teams.

Right To Brag – Night 1

The first night of the Right to Brag on Monday night saw five exciting games.
Thursday night’s team Mulroy defeated the day curler’s team Drummond on sheet A.
On sheet B Monday’s team Richardson was defeated by Thursday night’s team Lorette.
Monday night’s team Blake defeated the second day curling team Hunter on sheet D and on sheet E Tuesday night’s team Gordon squeaked by Friday night’s team Wilson.
In the youth section, on ice C was team Plant defeating team Foster.
Tonight on the ice sees team Hunter playing team Wilson on sheet A, team Blake playing team Gordon on sheet B, team Jones playing team Camin in the youth section, team Mulroy plays team Lorette on sheet D and team Drummond plays team Richardson on sheet E.

Be sure to come out and cheer on your league tomorrow night during the championship night.

This is the Club’s annual business meeting, and the opportunity for members to hear from the Board of Directors on the season just past and the year ahead, and to elect a new Board. All Club members are welcome to attend.

Closing Spiel and Skate Out

The closing spiel, sponsored this year by the Midland Golf and Country Club, takes place on Saturday April 14. This is your very last chance to curl on our ice this season, and there is still room for a few teams. If you don’t have a team but want to play, contact Colleen at 705-526-5631 and we will try to find you a spot. The cost to curl, dine, and dance is $200 per team or $50 per individual.

Right to Brag 2012

Our annual interleague competition, sponsored by Pizza Pizza, is scheduled for the evenings of April 10, 11, and 12 at 7 PM. Every league in the Club has one or two teams entered, and the stakes are high as the teams play down to the finals. Two teams – one adult and one youth – earn bragging rights as the best of the best. Come on out and support your friends, support your league, and support your Club in the final week of play.

The Scotia Bank Bonspiel 2012

The Day Curlers’ Scotia Bank Bonspiel was a great success this year. The bonspiel, organized by Dermot Quinn featured a ‘skins’ format. Each eight person team consisted of two four person teams which alternated on the ice every second end, playing a total of 12 ends. After close to four hours of competition the winning teams were determined.: Team Lyons/Drummond got third place, Team Bremner/Morton place second and the winning team was Team Hunter/Gowan. The bonspiel prizes were presented by Cherly Gethings and Bruce Thompson representing the Scotia Bank.

Our year end luncheon was catered by E.L.M. Catering and featured their wonderful spare ribs. This year’s Dream Team Award was won by skip Lynn Morton, vice Geoff Barley, second Dave McLaughlin, and lead Lawrence Currie. June Walton presented the Chuck and June Walton Award to the top male and female curlers: Lynn Morton and Geoff Barley. The top five female curlers were: Lynn Morton, Lana Lyons, Heather Hudson, Judy Whittam, Sally Sinclair. The top male curlers were: Geoff Barley, Marv Hebner, Bob Richardson, Dave McLaughlin, Jim Sinclair. Congratulations to all bonspiel winners and award winners.

Year end closing remarks were make by club president, Geoff Barley and then by Karen Mallany, Day Curling president. Bruce Henderson rounded out the afternoon by thanking the retiring executive members: Al Black, Carol Hackney and Keith Miller. He also introduced the new 2012-2013 executive including Karen Mallany, Ken Languay, Bruce Henderson, Betty Lou Rothwell, Marthe Scott, Marg Allan, John McCallum and Wayne Hayball.

Right to Brag play downs run next week April 3 -5 in a modified double elimination format.

Full Line Electronics Bonspiel

The Full Line Electronics Bonspiel was held this year on Valentines Day. Curlers from Penetanguishene, Elmvale and Coldwater joined the Midland curlers in a two draw bonspiel. All the prizes were presented by Heather Clarke from Full Line Electronics. The winning team from the first draw included: Skip Terry Jeffries from Coldwater, and Midland curlers Keith Miller, Marthe Scott and Elizabeth Broughton. The second draw winning team included: Bram Bosman from Coldwater, and Midland curlers Price Taylor, Greg Rothwell and Cindy Gilbert from Penetanguishene. The door prize provided by Full Line Electronics was a home theatre system and was won by Dennis Lemieux from the Elmvale Curling Club.

Bill Howard Memorial – Super8 Men’s Bonspiel

The Midland Curling Club was the scene of the Bill Howard Memorial-Super8 Men’s Bonspiel on February 5. This was a cash spiel with 10 teams competing for $1000 in prize money. The winning team was skipped by G. W. King (photo – left to right: Jason Le Clair, Dave Dalzell, Darryl Prout and G. W. King).

The team of Peter Mulroy (photo – left to right: Ian John, Michael Schuenemann, Peter Mulroy and Brian Wright) finished second with Bob Richardson’s team (photo – left to right: George Will, Rob Fry, George Dixon and Bob Richardson) finishing third.

Mrs. Bill Howard (Barb), who joined the players at lunch said, “It was always a dream of hers to have her boys play in this tournament.”

After dinner, the cash was awarded to the winners and draws were made for some great prizes donated by local merchants and individuals. A great time was had by all!
